I have now discovered that because I am a pensioner I can accept cheques in any currency, as there will be no charges to me for the conversion of same. Good news as I can now accept cheques for Sterling, American and Austrailian dollars ete. 

While not wishing to teach anybody "how to suck eggs" I found that if you Google in and open up "Exchange Rates" the second site down "Currency Calculator" is the simpliest way of doing a conversion.
